Get Them In From Hitter's Perspective

Key Points of the “Drive Them In” Round

  • Definition: A batting practice situation where the hitter’s goal is to score the runner from scoring position (2nd or 3rd base).

  • Game Context: Often comes with less than two outs. Priorities shift depending on runner location (runner on 3rd <2 outs = ball in play, runner on 2nd = gap/line drive).

  • Mindset: Productive outs matter, but line drives and hard ground balls are the ultimate goal.

Hitter’s Strategies for Success

  1. Situational Awareness

    • Runner on 3rd: hit the ball in play, preferably on the ground to the right side or in the air to the outfield.

    • Runner on 2nd: gap-to-gap approach, drive the ball through the middle.

  2. Elevate When Needed

    • With <2 outs and runner on 3rd, aim for a fly ball deep enough to score.

    • Use a slight uphill bat path — controlled, not a home-run swing.

  3. Stay Short & Adjust

    • Avoid overswinging. Short, strong contact is more effective than trying to “crush” the ball.

  4. Productive Outs Count

    • Sacrifice fly, grounder to the right side — still a win.

Batting Practice Round for Drive Them In

  • Setup: Imagine a runner on 3rd with <2 outs, or runner on 2nd needing a base hit to score.

  • Focus:

    • Round 1: Runner on 3rd — hit deep fly balls or grounders to the right side.

    • Round 2: Runner on 2nd — hard line drives, gap-to-gap approach.

  • Mental Cue: “Ball in play, run scores.”
